Thermoregulation: The First Step to Quality Sleep

Thermoregulation: The First Step to Quality Sleep

Thermoregulation is one of the most important factors that affect the quality of our sleep. The right duvets and pillows and the right bed linen can all help to achieve optimal body temperature, even in spite of ambient conditions.

Internal and External Body Temperature

A person has two types of body temperature - internal and external. The core internal body temperature refers mainly to the abdomen, head and chest. Ideally, it is around 36-37 °C, and its stability is largely influenced by our state of health. If the value is unstable, the body alerts us to illness. In contrast, the external temperature informs us about the condition of the muscles and skin. It is a more unstable value because it is affected by changing environmental conditions.

When a person is cold, their body starts to shiver; by contracting muscles, the body begins to generate more energy. On the other hand, when a person is hot, they begin to sweat; the body transfers moisture to its surface, and when this moisture begins to evaporate, the body starts to cool down.

Thermoregulation is the key to well-rested sleep and waking up feeling refreshed.

Thermoregulation During Sleep

The moment fatigue sets in, the body slowly begins to lower its internal body temperature and prepares itself for sleep. Only a cooled body can allow the brain to regenerate.

When we fall asleep, any temperature fluctuations can influence the quality of our rest. Temperature changes cause sleep disturbances, such as wake-ups or complete awakening. It is therefore necessary to maintain a microclimate close to the body that fully satisfies the body’s needs. A good quality mattress helps to stabilize the microclimate, as do a well-chosen bed sheet, bed linen, duvet and pillow.

It all Starts with Duvets and Pillows

Are you a hot sleeper, prone to night sweats? Or a cold sleeper, finding it hard to get warm?

If you belong to the first group, extra breathable duvets and pillows are your ideal choice, ones with superb moisture-wicking abilities. Our Comfort range of duvets and pillows fulfill these requirements perfectly.

If you’re prone to always feeling cold, we recommend you go for our Classic range. These duvets and pillows effectively retain naturally produced body heat. A common mistake people make is to put up the heating in the bedroom and sleep under covers that don’t work properly. This leads to excessive overheating during which the body cannot rest properly. Ideally, the temperature in our bedrooms should be kept at 16-20 °C, and good quality bed equipment should take care of all the rest.

What you Sleep On Matters

Other key factors that affect thermoregulation include a well-chosen mattress and covering it in a quality bed sheet. Choose a mattress with moisture-wicking abilities. Instead of opting for a traditional foam mattress, we recommend choosing a gel-memory, spring or latex mattress. A coir coconut fibre mattress is also a good option.

Bed sheets should be breathable, transporting moisture into the mattress from where it can be wicked away.

Bed Linen: The Cherry on the Top

Once you have chosen a quality base (in the form of the ideal duvet, pillow, moisture-wicking mattress and breathable bed sheet), add premium bed linen to bring its qualities to a new level. Breathability is the most important factor of quality bed linen. Luckily, all our collections meet this requirement, so all you have to do is pick the fabric or shade you most prefer from our range.

Practical Words of Advice

Our bodies lose the most heat from our feet and head. So, how can you effectively beat this fact? If you’re prone to feeling cold, wear socks and pull the duvet up to your forehead for a few minutes before falling asleep. Let the rest of your body breathe freely to avoid the aforementioned overheating.

Or, are you more a hot sleeper, prone to night sweats? Then wear pajamas. These act as the first barrier, wicking away moisture from the body, guiding it to the bed linen and fillers, and from there, evaporating completely.

Getting Well-Rested Sleep

To achieve maximum recovery, comfort and perfect thermoregulation during sleep, all these factors must complement each other. Getting quality sleep is a team game, where the loss of any one player takes its toll. The aim is to feel comfy under duvet, not sweaty or shivery. Thermoregulation takes care of this perfectly, bringing you the ideal balance, restful sleep and nights full of undisturbed sweet dreams.
